Big Boy Bed

Today marks another milestone not unlike first steps or first words--first big boy bed. I will say that my goal was to keep Cole Reynolds in his crib until he was 3. Generally speaking, he LOVED his crib. He didn't want to be taken out in the morning. He just liked to sit there once Joel or I came in to adjust to the new day.

However, in the last few weeks we set up a perfect storm for our impromptu transition to a big boy bed. Eater, our sweet baby boy never has been. Sleeper, on the other hand, was were Cole Reynolds excelled. Not that he didn't ever cry in his 21+ months or that he slept through the night at some ridiculously young age (that I believe some people should just keep to themselves), but he was no problem to put to bed once the routine was in place and he really didn't wake up all that often. Enter bedtime vomiting and vomit-shy parents and this is a recipe for setting new habits, which include parents running in on a dime if crying or coughing or gagging is heard.

All that to say that last night we drew a line in the sand and we'll see tonight who won....sadly it doesn't feel like any of of us today---yawn. Cole was soo upset when we didn't come running that he actually jumped out of bed. I am not sure how graceful his dismount was, but he did not kill himself thank goodness. Given that I've thought for awhile now that if he was properly motivated he could easily pull a Houdini and get out of his crib, I wasn't about to put a very angry little guy back in for the night. So, we pulled the mattress out of the crib and put it on the floor. It was not our best night to say the least, but let's hope that we are back on the right track. This morning, Joel converted the bed to the toddler bed above. Cole Reynolds is thrilled and keeps crawling in and out. Fingers crossed that tonight he loves it just as much.
