The Good, the Bad and the Funny

The bad first:  Cole Reynolds has been under the weather for the past four or five days.  He came down with croup--which sounded absolutely awful when the stridor was at its worst.  Thankfully the steroids have calmed the inflammation, and he is slowly getting better.  We aren't in the clear yet, but we are getting there.  Unfortunately, each illness sets us back on our feeding progress.  Even prior to the illness, Cole's interest in chewing was waning, which was disappointing, but the illness dealt us a huge set back.  For a few days, Cole legitimately didn't want to eat anything--and who could blame him.  So, even though we never want to backtrack on our progress, we were forced to abandon the feeding protocol.  Today we got back on the wagon and it was definitely tough sledding.  He managed to eat three mini meals grudgingly.  Thankfully, we haven't had a vomit today (fingers crossed) and that is the first day in over a week that we can say that.

The good second:  Gemma is doing great.  She is such a happy little gal.  She loves to laugh and smile.  Last Friday, she had a laugh off with big brother Cole.  It was hilarious!  The louder he laughed the louder she laughed until they were both literally screaming with laughter.  It truly warmed my heart.  Aside from the issues discussed above, Cole Reynolds is also doing great.  He is such an observant little guy.  Nothing gets past him.  He notices all kinds of small details in books (e.g., Where did his shoes go? Where are the bottom half of the wheels?), and he has a knack for remebering where all his favorite places are located.  If we are even in the vicinity of Lowes or Kidville, he points and lets us know where they are.  He had camp last week and did great!  He had no problems whatsoever with being left at camp.  I think he had a lot of fun learning about science and magents.  As an added bonus, he got to "fish" in a pretend lake with magnetic rods--very fortuitous given that he is into "fishing" lately.

The funny:  Tonight while Joel and I were trying to scarf down some dinner, Cole wanted Joel to read him a book about dinosaurs.  Joel explained to Cole that he had to fill his tummy but that he would read it later.  This did not satisfy Jr., so he came over to me to urge me to read the book to him.  I explained to him that although he didn't know it about me yet, I take eating very seriously and do not like to be disturbed while I eat.  After some repeated (and very annoying) pleas, Cole obviously got the picture that neither Joel nor I would cave and read the book, so he quickly conceived a plan "c" and exclaimed "Geoffrey"!  He took off around the corner at warp speed to wake his uncle up to read to him.  Thankfully for Joel and me, (a) Geoffrey woke up from his nap and obliged Cole and (b) the book was a rather long one.

After the book was over, Geoffrey told me that Cole had marched into his room and demanded that he turn off the tv because he wasn't allowed to watch it.  Nice!  Glad to know he is self-enforcing my rules for him.
