I now know why Kenny Chesney's house is on St. John's and not St. Thomas, because St. John's is better in every way - the beaches, the snorkeling, the restaurants and even the shopping. Though Amy and I went to St. John's earlier in the week, we never left Cruz Bay (the Big Town) which is really the arm pitt of St. John's. The island explodes with beauty and serenity once you leave Cruz Bay.
We had originally, planned to take the 'people' ferry over to Cruz Bay and then rent a dingy to tour the beaches on the North shore of St. John's. However, after consulting a couple of locals and much to Amy's pleasure, it seemed the only person who thought that a dingy rental was a good idea was the guy renting the boat. So we took the rented Ford Focus over on the car ferry.
From Cruz Bay we took highway 10 all the way across the island to Coral Bay on the East side of St. John's. There we had lunch as Island Blues, the perfect beach par (we would show a photo but we forgot to change the batteries on our camera and therefore no flash).
From Coral Bay we headed to the North shore of island to Watermelon Cay which is near/inside Leinster Bay. Watermelon Cay, a small island surrounded by coral that is off the tourist path due being to far from Cruz Bay, is very secluded and apparently has the best snorkeling in USVI. Not sure if it is the best snorkleing, but we saw sea turtles, stingrays and tons of reef fish. On the way back to Cruz Bay we stopped at Trunk Bay (and several other beaches not quite as pretty). Trunk Bay might very well be the prettiest beach I have ever visited.
It turned out to be a really full day and we have to wake up at 6:00am tomorrow for our sail to British Virgin Islands (BVI).
